What Is Christmas Massacre about?

Christmas Massacre is a thrilling horror game with arcade-like gameplay. Guide Larry to visit different locations to murder targets without being detected.

In this game, you are the threat. Each level asks you to stalk NPCs, study their surroundings, move through darker areas, and find opportunities to attack without allowing anyone to escape. The game draws inspiration from old-school slasher movies and deliberately crude retro horror aesthetics. Its visual presentation uses simplified character models, environments, and animations to create an atmosphere that feels more like a forgotten late-1990s horror title than a modern production. The result is intentionally strange. Christmas decorations sit alongside blood-soaked environments, while familiar holiday imagery becomes part of an increasingly disturbing nightmare. Besides, you can take a look at Slendytubbies and Cobb Can Move, which are awesome horror games you must try.

The Storyline in Christmas Massacre

The story unfolds across several dates, moving from Larry's childhood experience to his increasingly disturbing actions as an adult.

December 25, 1959: The Christmas Party

The story begins at a Catholic school on Christmas Day in 1959. Larry is told by a nun that he cannot attend the Christmas party, although the exact reason is not explained. Instead of accepting the decision, Larry makes his way into the school's lobby, where the other children are celebrating. He eventually enters the kitchen and takes a knife. From there, the Christmas celebration turns into a massacre as Larry attacks the people inside the school. This opening sequence establishes the game's central contrast between innocent Christmas imagery and extreme horror. The school also becomes important later, making the opening more than simply a shocking introduction.

December 23, 1979: The Tree's Instructions

Twenty years later, Larry is living alone in his house. This is where the game's strangest character enters the story: Larry's Christmas tree. The tree tells Larry that many people have been naughty and that he needs to punish them. Larry puts on a Santa costume, gets into his van, and travels to a house where he kills the people inside. After returning home, Larry receives approval from the tree. However, the tree immediately tells him that his work is unfinished and that there are more people who need to die. The relationship between Larry and the tree becomes the foundation of the game's narrative. Larry does not appear to question its instructions, and the tree effectively becomes the voice directing his actions.

Christmas Eve: The Grocery Store

On Christmas Eve, Larry travels to a grocery store. His objective is once again to eliminate everyone inside. After completing the massacre, he returns home. The tree then claims that it encountered a teenager while Larry was away and instructs Larry to kill him. Larry follows the command without hesitation. This section reinforces the repetitive structure of the story: receive instructions, travel to a location, complete the objective, and return home for the next instruction.

Christmas Day: The Situation Changes

On Christmas Day, Larry travels to another house and attacks a group of partygoers. When he returns home, the tree gives him a new ability: Larry can now throw knives at his targets. This changes the way you can approach certain encounters and adds another option to the stealth gameplay. Larry subsequently travels into town, enters a building, and kills everyone inside. However, when he returns home, things no longer feel normal. The house is dark and empty. The Christmas tree has disappeared. A stove behaves strangely, while a corpse in a wheelchair appears and then vanishes. Larry eventually goes to bed, leaving the meaning of these events unresolved.

New Year's Eve: Hallucinations and the Mortuary

The next major chapter takes Larry to a movie theater, where he once again carries out a massacre. After returning home, his experience becomes increasingly surreal. Larry begins seeing disturbing hallucinations. A corpse from the previous night appears to repeat his name and warn that he will burn in hell. The room appears to catch fire, while a huge set of chattering teeth blocks the stairs. These events suggest that Larry's perception of reality is breaking down. That night, he dreams that he is inside a mortuary. He kills people while running through seemingly endless corridors, creating one of the game's most nightmarish sequences. When Larry wakes, the Christmas tree returns. It tells him that it has something important to reveal, but before that, Larry must return to his old school and burn it down.

New Year's Day: Returning to the School

Larry returns to the Catholic school carrying a flamethrower. The final school sequence combines the game's stealth-horror mechanics with fire. Larry attacks the people inside and sets the building ablaze. However, the flamethrower introduces an additional danger: Larry can catch fire himself if he is careless. Eventually, Larry encounters the nun from the beginning of the story. She is now in a wheelchair and recognizes what Larry has become. She insults him and tells him that he will burn in hell for his actions. Larry kills her before leaving the burning school. When he returns home, police officers ambush him. The Christmas tree finally explains its role: it had cooperated with the FBI because it did not want to go to jail. The story then reveals that Larry was convicted of 36 counts of first-degree murder. The revelation completely changes the way you can interpret the relationship between Larry and the tree. What initially seemed like supernatural guidance turns into something far more disturbing.

December 24, 1985: The Mental Hospital

The story does not end with Larry's conviction. Five years later, Larry is inside a mental hospital. While the staff prepares for the night, he hides inside a closet. When a nurse comes looking for him, Larry emerges and kills her before continuing through the building. He eventually kills everyone inside and reaches the exit, allowing him to escape. This final sequence provides a grim ending to the story. Larry remains dangerous despite everything that happened before, and his escape leaves the conclusion deliberately unsettling.

Your missions in Christmas Massacre

The gameplay is designed around short, focused stealth encounters rather than extended exploration.

Hide, Observe, and Strike

Your main advantage is concealment. Moving through dark areas allows Larry to approach NPCs without immediately attracting attention. You need to pay attention to where characters are standing, where exits are located, and how your actions may change their behavior. A careless attack can alert nearby NPCs, while a discovered corpse can cause others to panic and attempt to escape. This makes positioning just as important as the attack itself.

Use Weapons

For most of the game, Larry uses a kitchen knife. The weapon fits the game's close-range stealth mechanics and keeps the early encounters relatively simple. Later, Larry gains the ability to throw knives, providing a ranged option. The final school sequence introduces the flamethrower. Unlike the knife, it can create a much larger threat because Larry can accidentally catch fire himself. The gradual addition of weapons helps the game change its gameplay rhythm as the story progresses without abandoning its core stealth mechanics.

Unlock Costumes and Masks

Customization is another part of the experience. You can discover different costumes and masks throughout the game, including:

  • Patient
  • Santa
  • Baby
  • Miner
  • Clown

The Santa costume is particularly fitting given the game's central Christmas theme, while the other outfits add a bizarre visual element to Larry's appearance. There are also eight dolls hidden throughout the game. Finding all eight unlocks Doll Mode. When Doll Mode is activated, Larry becomes extremely small, roughly the size of a toy figure. This unusual feature adds a playful, surreal twist to an otherwise brutal horror experience.
