Doki Doki Literature Club is an epic visual horror game with multiple endings. Write poems, make choices, uncover disturbing secrets, and explore the horror.

Simple mechanics of Doki Doki Literature Club?

Join Poetry Minigames

Writing poems is one of the most important gameplay systems in the first part of this indie game. Instead of manually writing an entire poem, you compose one by selecting words from different groups. Each girl has different preferences, so choosing certain words increases the likelihood that a particular character will enjoy your poem. For example, selecting words that appeal to Yuri can influence the scenes you experience with her, while different vocabulary can attract Natsuki or Sayori. This simple system does more than provide a minigame. It determines which character responds most positively to your poem and therefore influences which optional scenes you encounter. Monika is notably absent from this poetry-selection system for narrative reasons, despite being the president of the Literature Club.

Make wise choices

Your choices can influence relationships and determine which character receives more attention during particular sections. However, the game deliberately limits how much control those decisions ultimately give you. This is important because this psychological game initially encourages you to think like you are playing a conventional romance visual novel. You may spend time deciding which character you want to support, selecting appropriate poem words, and considering whether to pursue romance or friendship. As the story progresses, however, it becomes clear that the game's narrative is operating according to rules that are very different from those of a normal dating sim. The contrast between apparent player choice and predetermined events becomes an important part of the story.

Main Characters in Doki Doki Literature Club

Like Melissa Heart, this game also features various characters. The Literature Club contains four central female characters, alongside the unnamed male protagonist controlled by you. Each girl has a distinctive personality and plays an important role in the game's progression.

Monika

Monika is the confident and energetic president of the Literature Club. She is presented as capable, friendly, and encouraging, often acting as the person who keeps the club organized. She also occupies a unique position within the game's narrative. Unlike Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki, Monika is not part of the poem-selection minigame. Her importance becomes increasingly apparent as the story develops. Without revealing every detail of the game's twists, Monika eventually becomes central to the psychological horror that defines the later acts. Her relationship with the person controlling the game becomes fundamentally different from the relationships established during the opening portion.

Sayori

Sayori is your childhood friend and the person who encourages you to join the Literature Club. She is cheerful, energetic, and deeply interested in making other people happy. Her upbeat personality helps establish the warm atmosphere of the game's opening. However, Sayori's character also introduces one of the story's most serious themes. Beneath her cheerful exterior, she struggles with depression. Her storyline is one of the points where the game begins moving away from its apparent romance premise and toward psychological horror.

Yuri

Yuri is portrayed as quiet, sophisticated, and deeply interested in books. She is initially shy and reserved, but she has a passionate side that becomes increasingly important as the story progresses. Her character arc demonstrates how the game can take an initially familiar personality type and gradually transform it into something much more unsettling. As the narrative develops, Yuri becomes increasingly obsessive and unstable. Her storyline includes references to self-harm and other mature themes.

Natsuki

Natsuki has a tough and sometimes confrontational personality, but she also has a strong affection for cute things and manga. She can initially appear more difficult to approach than Sayori, but her character has vulnerabilities that become increasingly apparent as the story develops. Later sections reveal darker aspects of her home life, including implications of abuse and malnourishment. These details contribute to the game's broader exploration of problems that are hidden beneath seemingly ordinary relationships.

Interesting Story of Doki Doki Literature Club

The story begins with a familiar premise. You are encouraged to join the Literature Club, meet its members, write poems, and spend time with the girls. As the cultural festival approaches, the relationships become more personal. You can help Natsuki with baking cupcakes or assist Yuri with painting banners. Romantic tension also develops, giving the opening sections the appearance of a conventional visual novel. Then the tone changes.

Act 1: The Beginning of the Horror

The first major shift involves Sayori. After she reveals her struggles with depression, the story becomes increasingly serious. Depending on your earlier choices, you can either confess your love to Sayori or reaffirm your friendship. Soon afterward, the game presents a disturbing sequence involving Sayori that abruptly ends the first act. The sudden change is particularly effective because it contrasts so sharply with the cheerful tone established earlier. The game then returns you to the menu, but things are no longer normal. Your previous save data is erased, and the story begins again under altered circumstances.

Act 2: A Broken Reality

In the second act, Sayori is effectively removed from the story. The other characters no longer remember her, and Monika takes over the role of introducing you to the Literature Club. Although some events initially resemble the first playthrough, the world begins behaving incorrectly. You may encounter distorted character sprites, illegible text, strange dialogue, and other anomalies. The game increasingly makes it clear that something is fundamentally wrong. The characters' darker traits also become much more pronounced. Yuri becomes increasingly obsessive and unstable, while Natsuki's difficult home circumstances are revealed through dialogue and special poems. The story becomes less concerned with romance and increasingly focused on psychological deterioration. The festival preparations eventually lead to a disturbing sequence involving Yuri, after which the game's broken state becomes even more apparent.

Endings in Doki Doki Literature Club

Like Online Obsession, this game also offers multiple endings depending on how you approach the story and which optional scenes you experience. This structure gives Doki Doki Literature Club additional replay value because completing one route does not necessarily reveal everything the game contains.

The Standard Ending

After Monika is removed, Sayori becomes the club president and gains awareness of the game's nature. She initially thanks you for helping remove Monika, but the situation quickly becomes unstable. Monika ultimately intervenes, and the game reaches a much darker conclusion. During the ending sequence, Monika plays "Your Reality" before the game is ultimately shut down. A message from Monika explains that she has disbanded the Literature Club because she believes there is no happiness to be found within it, while still thanking you for taking part.

The More Positive Ending

There is also a more positive conclusion available if you experience all of the optional character scenes and make particular choices earlier in the story. In this version, Sayori recognizes your efforts to support the club members. Although she understands the nature of the game, she eventually says goodbye and acknowledges the affection shared between the characters. Monika plays "Your Reality" without deleting the entire game. After the credits, a message from creator Dan Salvato explains the purpose behind the project and thanks you for playing.

The Premature Ending

There is also a different outcome if Monika's file is deleted before starting a new game. Sayori becomes the club president but immediately realizes that something is wrong with the game's reality. She panics and closes the game. When you reopen it, the game presents another disturbing sequence. This ending demonstrates just how heavily the game relies on the relationship between its story and its underlying files.
