What Is Helltaker?

Helltaker is an engaging adventure game with 11 chapters. Move around Hell to push boxes, collect stone tablets, dodge traps, and win demon hearts.

The story begins when he decides to travel into Hell with one specific goal: build a harem of demons. This adventure game's opening immediately establishes its unusual tone. Hellfire, death, demons, and danger are mixed with cute visual designs and comedic dialogue. You are constantly reminded that this is a dangerous place, but the presentation refuses to take itself completely seriously. The story is narrated by Beelzebub, adding another layer to the strange journey. As you progress, the Helltaker encounters different demon characters and attempts to convince them to join his growing group. His promise is not exactly luxurious. At one point, he admits that all he can offer is coffee, turn-based strategies, and chocolate pancakes. Somehow, that becomes part of the charm.

How to play Helltaker

Explore the hell

Like Blackout, this game also offers exciting adventures. In this game, you must move through Hell, solve puzzles, reach the demon at the end of each stage, and convince her to join your group. Each stage presents a self-contained challenge. You have a limited number of turns to complete the puzzle, so randomly moving objects around the map is rarely a good strategy. Stones and skeleton soldiers can be pushed around the grid, while spike traps can instantly punish a bad move. Certain stages also contain key items that need to be collected before you can complete the route. The basic concept resembles Sokoban, but Helltaker adds its own rules and hazards. Instead of simply pushing boxes toward designated positions, you need to think about movement limits, enemy positions, traps, and the sequence of your actions. That makes each puzzle feel more like a small tactical problem than a conventional adventure-game obstacle.

Meet the Demon Girls

Reaching the end of a puzzle does not necessarily mean you are safe. After completing a stage, the demon associated with that area asks you a question. The correct response depends on understanding her personality and attitude. This is an important part of the game's design because the challenge is no longer purely mechanical. You have already demonstrated that you can solve the puzzle, but now you need to understand the character standing in front of you. An incorrect response can result in a bad ending, including death. In that situation, you may be sent back to the beginning of the stage and have to try again. The combination of puzzle-solving and character interaction gives this horror game its distinctive structure.

Various Characters

Like Death Spiral, this game also features various characters. Each demon you encounter has a distinct personality, and their dialogue helps establish the comedic tone of the adventure. Rather than treating the demons as interchangeable obstacles, the game gives each encounter its own identity. This matters because their personalities can also determine how you should respond during the question sections. The question at the end of a stage is not simply a trivia test. You are expected to infer what kind of answer the demon wants based on her personality. This makes the dialogue an extension of the gameplay. If you understand how a character behaves, her response may become easier to predict. If you ignore the personality established through the conversation, choosing an answer becomes more of a gamble.

The story

The Helltaker story follows the protagonist's descent into Hell as he attempts to assemble his demon harem. Narrated by Beelzebub, the story gradually introduces new characters and situations. The Helltaker's motivations are deliberately absurd, but the straightforward objective gives the game a strong sense of direction. You always know what you are trying to accomplish: move forward, solve the next puzzle, meet the next demon, and continue building your group. The humor comes from the contrast between this ridiculous goal and the dangerous environment surrounding it. You are technically invading Hell, yet the ultimate reward is spending time with demons while offering them coffee, turn-based strategies, and chocolate pancakes.

The final stage, titled Epilogue, changes the setting significantly. Instead of continuing the journey through Hell, the story moves to Earth, where the assembled harem is now living in the Helltaker's house. The conclusion offers two different possibilities. The first is the Regular Ending, in which the Helltaker opens the front door and discovers police waiting outside. The second is the Abysstaker Ending, which provides a secret route for anyone willing to investigate the game's hidden elements.

All Endings in Helltaker

The Helltaker endings are one of the more interesting parts of the game's replay value. While the regular conclusion is relatively straightforward, the Abysstaker route requires you to pay attention to clues hidden throughout the main game. The secret ending involves three stone tablets. Each tablet contains a sequence of moves, and the necessary tablets can be collected during three of the main stages. To access the Helltaker Abysstaker ending, you need to collect the three stone tablets hidden in specific stages during the main campaign. These tablets are important because they contain the movement sequences required to activate the secret route. Once you reach the Epilogue, the instructions from the tablets become relevant. You need to perform the indicated movements in the middle of the carpet inside the Helltaker's house. Following the correct sequence allows you to open a portal and access the Abysstaker conclusion. This secret route rewards careful exploration because the required information is not simply handed to you at the end. You need to notice the tablets during earlier stages and understand that they have a purpose beyond the immediate puzzle.
